Man is naturally competitive and the logical consequence of that instinct combined with an increase in leisure time brought about by collective living, was the origination of sports. While some, such as running and throwing contests undoubtedly hark back to the origins of Man, many are more recent such as those focussing on grace and poise.
Given how ingrained sports are in our culture, their popularity as a literary topic is unsurprising.
