The tenor horn is a brass musical instrument which, like many others in the brass family, is a transposing instrument set to the key of E-flat. It also known as the alto horn and 'peck horn' in the USA and the althorn in Germany. In keeping with other similar instruments, it has curved tubing and a conical shape (like the flugelhorn and the euphonium with a deep mouthpiece similar to that found on a cornet. Different bell arrangements are available but normally musicians choose between the bell going over or under the valves although alterative bell shapes can be purchased.

The tone of the tenor horn can be described as warm, rounded and mellow. As a result, it neatly fills a gap between the brassier tones of the cornet and trumpet and above the bass tones of the tuba and trombone.

The tenor horn was invented in the middle of the 19th century by the Belgian, Adolphe Sax, whose prinicpal claim to fame is the saxophone as his name suggests. Since its introduction, it has changed very little and, at the same time, become very popular in English brass bands.

The tenor horn is popular in marching bands and brass bands but not in a symphony orchestra. Tenor horn solos do exist but are few and far between.

Some experienced players claim that the tenor horn is the easiest brass musical instrument on which to get an embouchure.

Most brass bands will have at least one tenor horn.
