Study Skills
Work smart, not hard
Many students shine in the classroom and then flop on the
big day. This is not a case of not knowing the subject, it's a simple matter
of not conveying the extent of their knowledge of the subject to the
examiner. Other students get into a terrible nervous state because they
can't prioritise. These essential lifeskills are sadly not part of any
curriculum and it is left to the individual student and his or her family to
'sort it out'.
Learn what they don't teach you
Study skills courses can either be face-to-face or online.
To benefit from online study skills tuition you will need
the following equipment:

PC with medium spec processor
-
Soundcard and speakers (standard to most PC's)
-
Webcam (get one with built-in mike - prices from £15)
-
Mike (if visual not required) - prices from £5
MSN, YAHOO, AOL Messenger - All of these are free
-
Internet connection - preferably Broadband
Study skills courses should cover the following material
(all content should be 'negotiable' with the option of being tailored to
suit the student's precise requirements):

Time organising - how to schedule, when to work, when to
rest and when to play.#

What subjects to do together so that you stay fresh.
-
When best to do homework.
-
Essay writing (non subject specific) - structuring essays,
answering the question, balancing answers, what is required.
-
Presentation - general presentation skills, displaying
answers clearly, the examiner's point of view, spelling, punctuation,
grammar, handwriting and their role
-
Exam techniques - prioritising questions, what to do if you
can't answer the first part, how to get marks quickly, pacing yourself
-
Notemaking - how and what to record, sorting the wheat from
the chaff, filing, organising, referencing
-
Exam preparation - what to do the night before, how to keep
down nerves, what to do outside before and after the exam, the dangers of
discussing questions
Study Skills courses should be non subject specific since
the ability to carry out the foregoing in an optimum manner do not depend on
the subject being studied - they apply to everything.
In order to get the best out of the Study Skills tutor they
should not be counted upon to be of assistance outside of the Study Skills
coaching.
