When we first started offering music lessons we expected that the most popular subjects would be piano and guitar but we were greatly surprised to find that the favourite 'instrument' is the voice. The demand for singing lessons outstrips that for any other form of musical coaching.
So why the interest in singing? People book a singing tutor for a variety of reasons - some, admittedly, more serious than others. It is quite likely that the popularity of Karaoke in pubs has a lot to do with it. Backing tracks with suppressed lead vocals and visual displays of lyrics are now commonplace and there are many people who feel they have a talent waiting to be discovered.
Students want to sing anything from the whole range of song material - pop, rock, country, folk, blues and opera. The latter is a little more specialised and it needs a classically-trained tutor to get the student to benefit from the lessons.
An ability to read music is an advantage but not essential for the budding singer. Motivation and determination are, however, and it is no good to just practice once a week in the bath. If your voice is to strengthen and your ability to achieve and maintain particular pitches is to improve, you need to sing every day for a while. We recommend that you begin with 30-minute singing lessons and then work up to 1-hour ones as your vocal chords become stronger. It is essential not to overdo things at the start.
We have tutored singing lessons online using our remote service. There is no particular reason why the student and tutor need to be in the same room. With digital quality sound, the tutor can hear the student's voice perfectly clearly. Don't rule out online singing lessons - they are extremely effective and one way of overcoming the shyness factor too!
People often choose to give singing lessons as presents. Yes, they do make a nice and highly original gift but please be careful before you spring them on someone. We have had too many cases of the gift's recipient rejecting the present through embarrassment and, at the same time, upsetting both the tutor and the gift's giver.
One thing we can be certain of is that if there's something left in the world to sing about, there will always be a demand for singing.
