Personal Tuition
You're never too old (or too young) to learn
Personal tuition is the most effective and efficient way of
learning. Whether you are representing a child in need of some additional
coaching or whether you are an adult learner preparing for a professional
examination, a teacher or tutor can help you.
A good tutor will sit with the student and produce a plan of what to include
and how to structure the personal tuition however there are some guidelines
which should be adhered to unless needs dictate otherwise.
Firstly, personal tuition needs to be regular, intensive or ad-hoc. Briefly
these can be explained as follows:
Regular personal tuition - weekly or more frequent lessons which do not
allow the student time to forget between the tutor's visits and which
reinforce each other by containing a revision element at the start of each
lesson. This is suited to all types of learner and is essential for young
children who will definitely not benefit if the personal tuition is too
dilute.
Intensive personal tuition - Anything from 6-hour days to 60-hour
fortnights. The advantage of this is that the student becomes immersed in
the subject which dominates their existence. Coaching can explore all
aspects of the subject and, since there is no gap between lessons, a minimal
amount of time needs to be given over to revision. This type of personal
tuition is ideally suited to adult learners since it would normally be too
taxing for a child.
Ad-hoc personal tuition - Lessons when the student needs them. This type of
coaching is for where the student only needs help with tutoring in very
specific aspects of their subject. Personal tuition like this is suited to
degree students who may be having difficulty with some topics on their
course.
Learning is possible at any age if the motivation is there. No-one is too
old and, our experience shows us, that few are too young (we tutored down to
the age of 30-months). Personal tuition for the very young or the very old
can be a controversial subject but provided that the tuition is relevant,
not over-taxing and a pleasant experience then coaching can and should be
beneficial.
The ideal tutor can be hard to find and it may be necessary to persevere. A
good agency with experience and knowledge of each individual teacher on
their books can help you find your ideal coach and provide the most
effective personal tuition.
