A percussion instrument can literally be anything which can be used to produce a sound when it is hit, slapped, rubbed, scraped, tapped etc. This percussive sound is then normally used to provide a backing rhythm to music. Accordingly the list of percussion instruments is almost unlimited since just about anything can fall into the percussion category even if that is not the original intent of the builders of that object.

The word 'percussion' comes from the Latin 'percutire' (meaning to hit hard) whose supine is 'percussum'.
