A US client said (uncorrected letter):
"You did a great job in getting this done. I am taking Calc and Chem, with finals in May. I will definitely use you folks for future help. You were very attentative, friendly and quick to assist in getting me out of a jam (which was completely my fault and you didnt have to rush like you did) You went way above and beyond what I would have expected and I cant thank you enough.
Your companies services will be definitely utilized again (and recommended)"
"So, What is online tuition?"
Online tuition is individual or small group coaching which takes place over the internet. It is exactly the same as conventional face-to-face tutoring except that the tutor is not physically in the same room.
"Are there different types of online tuition?"
Yes. Lessons can be by exchange of emails, by live (written) conversation, by voice or by sound and picture (like your very own TV channel).
"What equipment do I need?"
If you are reading this, you already have a computer with Internet access. You will need an email account at least and ideally a microphone (or better still a webcam), a soundcard and speakers. Prices for webcams have plummeted recently and you can pick up a well-specified one for under £20 ($40). Make sure that you get one which includes a built-in microphone otherwise you'll have to buy that separately - they are only about £6 ($12) but it's the nuisance value of having two pieces of equipment you'll want to avoid.
"But isn't this a gimmick?"
No, these are qualified people doing the same sort of tuition that you would have had face-to-face over the internet. Please don't mix up online tuition with websites which make all sorts of rash claims about how if you sign up for their self-teaching course you will be able to do this, that and the other. This is merely the modern face of an old-fashioned and well-established service.
"But I don't think my son/daughter etc would maintain concentration"
There's no difference between online and face-to-face in this respect. The tutor is still present and 'live' and is fully aware of a student not participating. The main advantage is that the tutor can pull the plug on the lesson early if deemed appropriate whereas in a face-to-face session the tutor will expect payment for the full, booked lesson regardless of whether it was terminated early or not. An experienced tutor should be just as capable of keeping control over the 'net as they would in person.
"It's a bit 'different'!"
The students who have experienced online tuition seem to generally agree that the first fifteen minutes are a bit unusual but after that it's 'old hat' and they soon forget that the tutor could be thousands of miles away.
"Are there any advantages?"
Certainly. With online tuition, you get the pick of the world. Particularly for the higher level students, this means that you can usually be guaranteed a specialist on your topic. The second main advantage is that the limitations of geography no longer apply. Before online tuition, it was sometimes a case of were there any tutors anywhere near the client (for rural areas) - now it doesn't matter as location is irrelevant.
"Are there any ages more or less suitable to online tuition?"
We have tutored as young as 4 years old via online. The mother of the twins was very skeptical to begin with but agreed to a trial lesson. She soon came back and blockbooked a whole batch which she then repeated several times (the children were learning French prior to the family's move there). She had nothing but praise for the whole set up and sent us several testimonials. The point she made was that two short lessons a week was by far superior to one long one plus she was completely at ease with the nice friendly lady at the other end of the link. What could be more secure? We have seen nothing so far that indicates any lower age limit other than that governed by operating the keyboard. Obviously online tutoring cannot easily be used to help with problems like improving handwriting but even that can be tackled using a graphics tablet and pen. We do not see any upper age limit for online tuition.
"When do I pay?"
You should expect to pay for lessons in advance as tutor and student do not meet up (which is when payment is usually made). You can make it a single lesson to begin with (we advise that you start with one to see how you get on) or as a blockbooking (with an appropriate saving). You should not be expect to be tied to a particular frequency, duration or time. As long as the tutor knows your requirements, that should be OK.
"What if I'm not happy?
The agency should find you another tutor. There's no awkward embarrassment or risk of seeing someone in the street.
"Isn't the whole thing just for children?"
No, far from it. The great thing about online tuition for businesses is that staff can learn from their desks and that mixed ability groups can be split and reformed with other staff requiring the same material but located elsewhere. Another advantage is that the less common languages are available everywhere and not just in a few big cities.
"What about the size of groups?"
I don't want my son/daughter to be one of a thousand vying for the tutor's attention
Most of the online tuition is one-to-one so this is not relevant. You may find some special promotions, like 'Summer School', where there are groups. It would easily be possible for a greedy agency to get carried away and have massive groups. Unfortunately, the tuition would then become little more than a TV programme and lose all its benefits. If you are forming or joining a group, the maximum size should be 12 students.
"I'm not happy about having my child let loose on the internet"
Online tuition is the most secure form of tuition there is. Parents are welcome to sit in on lessons and to read the conversation log afterwards (please do not show it to friends though as that would constitute breach of copyright). The tutor will be the only adult present on the lessons and all other students in a group (if that is what your child has joined) will be known to the agency.
"What did our clients say about online tuition?"
"It really does feel as if the tutor is actually there and able to tell exactly what you're doing. We played 'Frere Jacques' as a round and there was no timelag or anything."
Student having violin lessons. Distance between student and tutor - over 1,000 miles.
