Oboe Lessons
Learn to play the Oboe. Oboe tutors throughout the UK; more welcome.
The oboe is not an easy instrument to play. It is a member of the woodwind family but unlike other woodwind instruments, the oboe has a double reed fitted. This is just part of this amazing instrument's complexity but it is this same complexity which gives the oboe its wide sound range and unique 'sad' sound.
An oboe is separated by three joints. The first section has about 10 holes (depends on version) and these are covered or uncovered by the oboist's left hand. The right hand operates the next section of the oboe - again with 10 to 12 holes. Finally the end section or bell has 2 more holes which are controlled by the right hand but which are only used to play the lowest notes. All-in-all there are 45 keys on a modern oboe - a fact which goes a long way to account for their high price!
Even the cheapest new oboe can cost £600 ($1200) and an intermediate quality instrument can easily set you back £2000 ($4000) but then again, who could listen to the haunting melody of Gabriel's Oboe (written by Ennio Morricone) without wanting to play one?
A modern oboe will normally be made from African Blackwood but other popular materials include Rosewood, Ebony and Violetwood or even plastic resin which has the double advantage of both not being so prone to cracking as well as being cheaper.
Like any other woodwind instrument, there is an option for the oboe's keys to be either covered by fingers or by rubber-coated plates. Professional players will always choose the former as this gives them maximum flexibility over note production but this option is not suitable for beginners as it renders an already difficult instrument, nigh on impossible to master.
Since the oboe is such an expensive instrument, it needs to be cared for accordingly. The reeds should be rinsed out and thoroughly dried after each use. The body should also be cleaned and dried and fingerprints, grease and other deposits wiped from the surface of the oboe.
The oboe should be stored in a hard case between use to prevent damage to its delicate keys.
This is no easy instrument to master and you will need to find a good oboe teacher to help you learn. That said, we hope our guide has given you the confidence to go out and buy an oboe.
