Become A Tutor
Register as a tutor
This page tells you what makes a good, bad or indifferent tutor. Which sort are you?
What do both agencies and clients look for in a tutor? Who DO they want and who DON'T they want?
Some would-be tutors have an odd idea about what tuition is. Our many years of experience shows us that we tend to find that tutors fall into one of three categories:
|
Type 1
Out-of-work teachers, lecturers or the like looking to earn some money while they are in-between jobs. They tend to have very little or no experience of tutoring and often assume that the agency (or the student) will provide syllabus material, books, exam papers etc.
Tuition is viewed as being akin to supply work where Teacher B stands in for Teacher A today and Teacher C takes over from both of them tomorrow.
This tutor will upset clients by doing a disappearing trick leaving everyone in the lurch (although they won't see it that way). The excuse is always because of other obligations or that a full-time or better-paid job presents itself.
These people don't want to realise that their students rely upon the tutor's regular visit - someone whom they have invested a great deal of time and money in. Many such 'tutors' do not even see the problem when they drop students just before their exams.
You are not tutor material.

Type 2
'Professional' type tutors who register with every tuition agency they can find. They view agencies very much as a means to an end and forget that working for 10 agencies means 10 different (yes, there will be!) systems, 10 different forms to fill in each month and 10 agencies who realise that the tutor has no longterm loyalty.
This one flits from agency to agency picking up numerous bad habits along the way. They inevitably come to prefer the agencies which skimp on the contractual side of the arrangement by cutting corners (and often breaking the law) and proudly boast about how little 'Agency X' asks of them by way of information and feedback.
You are not tutor material either.

Type 3
People who enjoy the main aspect of one-to-one work, the firsthand experience of seeing a student learning and developing. They may not do tuition as a main job (although some do) but they set aside two, three or more evenings a week to fit in their lessons. They rarely register with more than two agencies and will reciprocate any loyalty that is shown to them.
Tutors like you are often with a good agency for years and their skills, preferences and timetables become well-known. When parents contact the agency, they can have their selection steered towards such tutors with confidence. Old-hand tutors like this become friends and not just another name on the database.
You sound ideal!
