Become A Tutor
Register as a tutor with a tuition agency
This page tells you the typical way of working for most tuition agencies.

When a client contacts the office, a member of staff discusses their requirements and quotes them prices. They are also told a bit about the probable tutor and any travelling fee.

If they book (a first lesson), the nearest suitable tutor (offering that subject and level and with appropriate mobility) is called and offered the booking.

If the tutor declines another tutor is approached.

If the tutor accepts, they are given the details of the client whom they must contact straight away.

Immediately after contacting the client, the tutor reports to the office and the appropriate contractual paperwork is despatched.

At the end of the lesson, the client pays the tutor the following:

The tutor's fees for the tuition (see previous page).

A travelling fee if the lesson did not take place at the tutor's premises - this is set by the tutor (within reason).

The agency's stated fee for advertising, recruiting and administering the lesson - all clients must accept the fees before they are placed with a tutor.

The VAT due on the lesson fee (you are advised of this for information only, there should be no work implication for you).

The tutor passes on the agency's fee (with the VAT) after the first lesson and on either a fortnightly or monthly basis thereafter.

Most agencies these days allow for timesheets to be filed online along with virtually all of your administrative work. In most cases (and apart from collecting a new student, your administrative work can be done without ever having to call the office (eg report first lesson times, fill in timesheets, pass on agency fees, advise of address and phone number changes, subject coverage etc etc).

Tutors retain a copy of their timesheet as a permanent certification of the work they have done and a breakdown of the fees which they have collected.
The foregoing applies to most bookings however there are some which are not conducted in that manner. If you are offered anything involving a different payment system, it should be discussed in detail with you when you are offered the client.
