Register as a tutor with a tuition agency

This page tells you an agency's general requirements for being a tutor.

Have you got what it takes to work as a tutor?

Requirements

You don't have to be a teacher to tutor - it depends on what you are offering and what age groups you will be tutoring.

For all tutors - you will need to have:

  1. A good standard of literacy and oral communication skills.

  2. Patience in plentiful supply.

  3. A university degree and/or teaching qualification in the subject(s) you wish to tutor.

  4. Sufficient experience and knowledge of your subject to impress the agency and its clients. If you are aged under about 21 you are unlikely to possess this experience and/or will be rejected by clients in preference to a more mature and experienced candidate. It is not reasonable to expect an agency to engage non-viable tutors (see below).

  5. Availability during the evenings or at weekends for the remainder of the academic year.

  6. Suitable materials for yourself and your students to use during the lessons.

  7. An Enhanced CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) Disclosure which is under 3 years old. Agencies can help you apply if you do not possess a CRB Enhanced Disclosure or if you have one which is more than 3 years old.

Plus for tutors of primary-aged children - you will also need to have:

  1. Experience of dealing with under 11's - probably in a classroom environment.

Plus for tutors of other subjects - you will also need to have:

  1. Qualifications in relevant subjects above the level you propose to tutor them at.

Plus for native-speaking tutors of foreign languages - you will also need to have:

  1. A good standard of education.

  2. Prior experience of explaining your language to people.

  3. Suitable resources for tutoring young children if you are proposing to teach them.

Plus for musicians you will also need to have:

  1. Proven ability with your instruments above the level you propose to tutor them at.

  2. Your own instruments.

There is no charge for registering with an agency but tutors should remember that it also has standards it needs to maintain. Accordingly, would-be tutors who are unlikely to impress clients, have demonstrated a bad attitude or who do not possess the minimum standards above should expect to be summarily rejected.
