Music is a great way of 'chilling out' at the end of a stressful day. Thirty minutes of playing can undo the problems created by a day of pressure at work or home. It is also a social - keep playing and eventually you will be good enough to entertain others or join in as an accompaniment.

A lot of people think they should book music lessons first and then buy the instrument. It is a better idea to find a music shop which offers a 'try before you buy' service whereby you hire the instrument for a few weeks and this money is discounted against the instrument's cost if you then choose to keep it.

There is little point in taking music lessons before you have the instrument to practice on. It is true that many tutors will carry a spare instrument but very few will be prepared to leave it behind (even for a fee) at the end of the lesson.

The best way of mastering a musical instrument is to do a 'little and often'. A few minutes a night, every night, is better than an hour every now and then. Learn how to play without the instrument - ie by imagining you are playing it and moving your fingers as if it was there.
