Icon advertising - what is it and can it work for your website?
Icon advertising - the new way of website promotion. If you're looking for a new idea for getting your site seen then icon advertising could be your answer. You certainly get more pixels for your money by buying an icon but what is this form of advertising and can it really work for you?
One of my colleagues, Charanjit, runs such a site and he takes time out to explain what icon advertising is all about. Can you briefly introduce yourself?
My name is Charanjit and I own the Be Unequaled website. Our icons offer an opportunity to buy a piece of web real estate that reaches thousands of visitors every month.
How does your system work?
You purchase an icon sized ad (16x16 pixels) and this contains a link to your site. If you buy one of the first 50 icons, you get to see your icon in a variety of positions across the parent site (Be Unequaled) and then as part of an icon ad module that appears on most of my future personal projects (3 websites in total by the end of 2007).
What are the main advantages of this form of advertising?
For the first 50 icons, a great deal of exposure across multiple domains. For the rest of the ads, thousands of unique viewings over the listing period at an affordable price when compared to some more traditional methods. The novelty factor can make them more appealing to visitors than banner ads.
Why is what you do different?
The idea is the next step up from the milliondollarhomepage which sold 1x1pixel squares in blocks of 100 (10 x 10 pixels). With icon ads, it's a similar principle, but a larger space for a smaller fee. The fee varies depending on the position. The lower down the grid, the less you pay. As mentioned before, the top spots also benefit from a exposure in multiple positions across multiple websites.
