Homeschooling

Schoolphobic? Bullying Problems? Missed Lessons? Poor Teaching? Disability? Illness?

Homeschooling - how can that make all the difference and how do you go about getting the ball rolling?

An ever-increasing number of parents are becoming disillusioned with the standards of teaching and student-control in our schools and are turning to home-education as a preferred means of giving their children a solid foundation upon which to build. A lot of parents turn to tuition agencies to provide a complementary service to themselves (eg they may need help with a particular subject or subjects while they do the rest) or even come to an agency for the whole curriculum.

Tutors can assist homeschoolers in a number of ways. Because of the cost involved, we strongly recommend parents consider online tuition which is roughly half the price of face-to-face tuition yet you still get a qualified and experienced person in real time. Apart from the price, the system allows the agency to bring its full subject coverage to even the most rural of areas. It is also easier to provide the service at just about any time of day.

Anysubject Ltd is pleased to recommend Letshomeschool to parents interested in home educating their children.

Letshomeschool is run by Angie Farnaman, an experienced homeschooler herself.

The following information was provided by Letshomeschool which we feel is a reputable source of information and advice. Anysubject Ltd cannot, however, be held responsible for the consequences of any action taken as a result of this advice and parents are strongly advised to discuss matters with their Local Education Authority before undertaking any action.

For parents who have considered homeschooling but are "sitting on the fence" we have come up with a list of reasons to homeschool your child. We know that homeschooling is not right for all children or all parents but it is a great education alternative. Please look through this list and if you would like more information visit us at http://www.letshomeschool.com/

  • To instill in your children a love of learning.

  • To teach your children in the best possible way for their needs.

  • To keep them from the negative social aspects of public schools.

  • To instill values and morals in children as your teach academically.

  • To promote family closeness.

  • More time with your children, and more quality of time.

  • To give your children individual instruction.

  • To let your children grow independently, without the pressure of peers.

  • Statistics will tell you that homeschool children test better. They have also been found to be more confident in social settings.

  • Because you know your children better than anyone and you love them.

In the UK homeschooling is an option for anyone regardless of funds available however there are certain criteria that have to be met. There are many sites advocating that parents can homeschool FULL-STOP and do so without any official permission but it is not as easy as that.

Technically this is true but (and 'but' can be a big word) Local Education Authorities (LEA's) have the following responsibilities (in plain English). They have the power and obligation to ensure that:

  • Truancy does not occur

  • Children are not used as cheap labor

  • Teenagers reach school-leaving age prepared for work and thus not to be a burden on society

  • The education meted out is appropriate and adequate

This taken as literally as it can be gives Local Authorities an immediate 'right of access' to your homeschool. Some LEA's will consider just being informed of what is going on sufficient, some LEA's will want full details of the curricula being taught and some may even send a School Inspector around to see that the material being taught is appropriate and sufficiently challenging/targeted to reach the required level. The simple fact is that there is no single right answer to how to behave, what to teach or how many hours a week should be taught.

Remember that LEA's have legal departments and truancy is viewed very seriously with parents now being held accountable. The following is a suggested procedure which should steer you clear of trouble.

  • Having made the decision to homeschool, you must tell the Head of your child's school on or before the first day you keep him or her home from school. If you do not, it could be taken as truancy. The school has a legal responsibility to maintain a register of attendance and this must be filed with the LEA. You do not need to ask for permission to homeschool, but you must tell the school - preferably in writing by recorded delivery.

  • Talk to your LEA (the Education Department of your County, Borough or District Council). Tell them your plans and ask them for any input. Most parents who have done so have reported back how helpful they have been (for example they will know of other parents doing the same who you might be able to do book-swaps with). You do not need to ask permission but let them give you their thoughts on the matter. This will stand you in good stead later.

  • If the LEA tells you how many hours a week and how many subjects to cover you have your answer, if not, then it is suggested that you cover English, Maths, Science and one other subject (of your child's choice, perhaps) so that you can aim for 5 GCSE's (Science is a double-award and counts as 2 GCSE's). Book a tutor or teach that subject yourself for 2 hours per week per subject and then give your child double that time per week per subject for supervised self-study.

  • Supervised self-study is something the LEA may be very concerned about. From their point of view it is the difference between knowing that your child is quietly sitting reading textbooks, doing questions etc under the watchful eye of a responsible adult (no teaching experience needed) and worrying about them running the streets and getting into trouble. You do not need to book a tutor to supervise this study period - any responsible adult will suffice.

Don't forget you have the legal right to home educate, they have the legal right to ensure it is done properly. Get the LEA on your side - it makes life a lot easier.

For an effective modern approach to education you cannot beat homeschooling.
