Home Tutor Service
Home tutor - what makes a good one?
First of all it is necessary to define the actual role of such a person.
A home tutor (or peripatetic tutor as they are also known) is a teacher who visits the house of the student and provides a teaching service in the home of the student. The service is popular because of the convenience offered by the tutor through their being prepared to make the journey. This is particularly important to the parents of young children who can use the time while the home tutor is with their child to perform other tasks or be with the child's siblings. Parents also feel 'more comfortable' with the lessons taking place in their own home.
Most lessons are required during the school year and so peak demand for tuition is from September to May.
Now we have outlined the job description of a home tutor, we can investigate characteristics which are desirable in such an individual. Obviously knowledge of subject matter and relevant exam requirements are taken as read - that is standard for all providers of private tuition.
Mobility
The tutor needs to be mobile. They obviously need to be able to travel to the house of the student and this will typically be within a 5-mile radius of their own home. To do this a car is clearly the preferred option but Public Transport can also be the answer if both parties live in a major conurbation. If the tutor cannot drive (or get access to a car on a regular basis) or lives in an area with a poor bus or train service, then this is not a suitable form of work.
Dedication
The highest demand for the services of a home tutor come during the most inclement months. Tuition is likely to be after school or work and most concentrated during the winter months. This means turning out in the cold and dark after having grabbed a light snack at home, perhaps. It takes a considerable amount of effort to turn out into the cold some nights!
Commitment
The student will invest time in the tutor explaining what he or she needs to know. Parents, in particular, want to get to know the person who is being given one-to-one access to their child. They don't want a different face each week, they want the same person - week in, week out. As a result this is not the job for you if you have a busy social life or other obligations/demands on your time. If you think you are likely to have to cancel more than one lesson a month then do not consider becoming a home tutor.
Sociability
This is where the chief difference between a teacher and a tutor becomes most apparent. In a classroom situation, the personality of the teacher is not a key issue. Of course it is important that your students learn from you but it is not essential that they like you. When you travel to a student's house then you are both a guest and a professional. You need to convey a feeling of competence and approachability whereby the student feels completely at ease asking you questions or for a further explanation of a point which is troubling them.
Did you know that the most popular subjects for a home tutor are: Mathematics, English, Sciences, Entrance Exam preparation, Elocution, Piano and Violin lessons? Could you teach any of those subjects?
If you feel that this article describes you then you may have what it takes to be a home tutor!
