The 'free list of tutors' is the scourge of the tuition service. As a truly impartial organisation, we strongly discourage parents and students from asking for 'Free lists of tutors'. Here are some facts about the so-called 'Free' lists of tutors.
The free lists of tutors are only free to receive. If you actually engage anyone on the list you have to pay. Doesn't sound very 'free' any more, does it?
You will be asked for you full contact details. Why do you need to give your phone number and your child's details to receive a free list of tutors? Simple - in return for your free list of tutors, your child's details are sprayed out by email and snail-mail to anyone whom the agency thinks may be suitable. In turn, they are pressured to pressure you to book. What seems a very relaxed and easy way to engage a tutor turns out to be nothing more than yet another hard-sell routine. Did you really expect otherwise?
The free list of tutors only gives a 'recommended' rate, not a fixed rate. They also fudge this by stating 'you pay the tutor £x for the tuition'. Read that sentence again. You pay £x for the tuition - what about the tutor's travel fee, the agency's fee, the VAT? What starts off as a bargain soon turns out to be a very different kettle of fish and the final figure may be very different to what you thought you would be paying.
Imagine it was your son or daughter on one of those free lists of tutors - how would you feel about all their personal details being circulated to anyone and everyone? To say that such things are insecure is the understatement of all time.
The agencies which send out these free lists of tutors can have no idea whom you are meeting, when or where. A proper tuition agency will know all of this information for all of its clients and tutors. Every arrangement is personally assigned by a human being and recorded by one too.
When it comes down to it, there is very little truly free in life - don't ask for a free list of tutors, ask how your chosen tuition agency can help. Don't use a free list of tutors as a substitute for old-fashioned service and care.
You can be certain of two things - nothing worth having is truly free and also that decent tutors don't need to throw out their personal details all over the internet, you won't find them on a free list of tutors.
