Fiddle Lessons

Learn to play the Fiddle.

The fiddle instrument was the violin's predecessor. It is a four-stringed instrument made in different shapes and sizes. Like other members of the strings family, fiddles are best played using rosin powder, which causes friction and therefore helps the strings to vibrate when stroked. The powder prevents the sound from being rough or squeaky.

A fiddle needs a good bow and traditionally this is strung with horsehair and has a knob for adjusting tension.

Fiddle playing is an art that can best be mastered by spending a lot of time listening to fiddle music. The instrument is played by feeling and finding notes. The player places their hand on the neck and masters respective sounds in relation to the position of the instrument. The fingers are placed on the strings and at least one of the fingers can reach most of the strings without shifting.

Fiddle playing is done using the fingers placed on strings in positions where they naturally fall in place where the notes are. It requires the player to establish hand position. This four-stringed instrument is tuned perfectly in fifths. In the family of cello, double bass and fiddle, its pitch is the highest.

Fiddles produce distinct sounds which are heard in genres like country music, folk, Cajun, Canadian, Arabic and Balkan. Fiddles are constructed with a flat bridge to play double stops and shuffles easily. It also allows the playing of chords and the bridge of a three-stringed fiddle is flat enough that the three strings can be played simultaneously.

Fiddles with rounded curves at the bridge top are preferred since they allow players to articulate the notes clearly and easily. Fiddles are fitted with standard classical bridges irrespective of the music style played on them. Using steel strings produces sounds that are more fiddle-like than synthetic or gut strings.

Steel strings are more easily tuned and are commonly preferred by players. Fiddle music mostly consists of dance music since a fiddle can be pushed harder than a violin and still keep the beat. Traditional Hungarian folk music fiddlers use the three stringed fiddles; the bass is uniquely played using crude and heavy folk bows made by stout sticks. The player makes the horsehair tense by using squeezing techniques when playing.

Fiddle playing has a huge variety of folk music and ethnic traditions with each having a distinct sound. Fiddles are delicately tuned instruments and require maintenance and care. The instrument should be stored in the right way to ensure its condition is preserved. Proper maintenance keeps the instrument in great shape and playing for years.

Fiddle strings should be replaced on a regular basis; fine tuners can be removed or added. Tailpieces do not make a big difference and can be removed. Fiddles should be bought with great care since the setting up is right is more important than the fiddle. The size of fiddle depends on body size and arm length. If it is for a child a cheaper fiddle can be purchased as it will inevitably need to be replaced as the child outgrows it.

There are various options when buying an instrument and consideration needs to be given as to whether to buy new, vintage or used fiddle.
