Euphonium Lessons

Learn to play the Euphonium. Euphonium tutors throughout the UK; more welcome.

The euphonium is a member of the brass family of musical instruments. Its name is Greek in origin, coming from the words
'eu' and 'phonium' meaning 'good' and 'voice' respectively - ie 'sweet-voiced'. This accurately describes the euphonium's gentle tone. As a typical brass musical instrument, it is conical and takes either a piston (or less commonly), a rotary valve.

The euphonium can be traced back to the oldest of all brass musical instruments, the serpent although it only really appeared in its present form during the early 19th century. The compensating euphonium, popular in the UK, was invented at the end of that century and the instrument has not changed much since.

A euphonium player can be known by a variety of names - euphist, euphophonist, euphoniumist or a euphonist.

The sound produced by a euphonium is typically described by the adjectives - warm, rich and velvety and it is often played with a lot of vibrato.

A beginner's euphonium will usually have only three valves while an intermediate player's or professional's euphonium will have a fourth valve. Fingering is identical to that of the trumpet or tuba but beginners often find it difficult to get the sound quality that is attainable by more experienced players. This is partly due to the characteristics of the musical instrument and also down to the effect that a higher quality (and more expensive) instrument will have on its output.

Another feature of this musical instrument is that its diameter continuously increases with its length (like other members of the brass family).

The euphonium is probably the least-known musical instrument from what might be called the 'popular' brass family. As a result, it is often referred to as a small tuba or a baritone horn. This leads to confusion since, although the instruments are similar and are even interchangeable, they are different.

The double-belled euphonium is generally only found in the USA and it has a second smaller bell in addition to the main one allowing the musician to move from one bell to another even in the middle of a bar using the additional valve. This made it sound similar to a trombone.

The euphonium is a stalwart member of a brass band but its rich sound makes it a good choice for a smooth-sounding solo. It is also popular in marching bands although the marching baritone (which is smaller and easier to carry) is sometimes preferred in its place. A bugle-band will also often make use of a euphonium.
