English School

Of course you can speak the language!

An English school is an option if you wish to learn the English language in a group as opposed to with a private tutor. There are obvious advantages and disadvantages to attending a school of English which should be considered before even shortlisting a particular school or college.

English School - Principal Advantages

  • Group experience - learn from others as they learn

  • Social aspects - make friends learning together

  • The courses are probably going to work out cheaper than individual coaching

  • Pre-written course which can be read prior to booking

  • Reputation of the English School

  • Recognised certification on successful completion

English School - Principal Disadvantages

  • No individualism - learn what you are given to learn

  • No flexibility in timing or schedule - language courses run at the times specified by the English school

  • Waste time listening to others learning what you already know

  • Lump sum payment in advance - no opportunity to pull-out if you don't like the courses offered

  • Fixed location - student must go to the English School

  • May be many incalculable ancillary costs such as meals at the school, books and equipment etc

English is not an easy language to learn - even native speakers find its spelling and grammar very difficult. Finding the right school of English to meet your requirements is, therefore, particularly difficult if you don't speak English, and, of course, if you did speak English you would have no need of an English school!

Before you start collecting prospectuses from every English school in your area, make a shortlist of what you wish to achieve. For example:

  • What level are you and what level do you wish to get to?

  • Do you require any technical vocabulary?

  • How flexible are you on the timing and location?

  • What is your maximum budget for the course?

  • How many students would you accept in a class group? (Normal minimum is about 10 and over 30 is too crowded).

  • Are you going to the English School to just learn English or are you wanting an experience of a traditional English school?

  • After you complete the course, will you be required to speak publicly?

  • Do you need particular help with your accent?

You can probably think of other factors which you will need to take into consideration. When you have the prospectuses in front of you, score each school of English according to how well they cater for each of these needs. If the prospectus doesn't have all the required information then write to the school asking them to provide an answer.

Your course will not be cheap and you need to learn as much as you can from it. Accordingly it is essential you choose the English School.
