Classical Greek Lessons
Ancient Greek is not just a language for archaeologists
Classical Greek or Ancient Greek as it is also known,
was a widely spoken language during the period from the 9th century BC to
the 6th century AD. This time period covered the time when Greece was a
major influence on all things cultural and scientific and many plays and
great orations were both conducted and recorded in Classical Greek.
The Ancient Greek alphabet is generally considered to be the oldest alphabet
in the world and has 24 letters (see below).
Classical Greek may no longer be an official language of any country, but it
is still a very popular language to learn. It is almost compulsory for
would-be archaeologists and anyone studying the origins of a European
language would do well to get to grips with it since Ancient Greek is the
stem of many of our modern words and English is no exception. As a result,
Classical Greek is still taught in some English Public and Grammar Schools
although it is not as popular as it once was and is less common a classical
language to study than Latin. Classical Greek is often part of a Classics
qualification.
Classical Greek owes only a passing similarity to Modern Greek although if
an Ancient Greek passage is written in non-archaic (ie modern format), a
modern Greek might well understand it.
Although the average person in the street would almost certainly deny
speaking any Classical Greek, the simple fact is that we use its alphabet
all the time. Scientists are constantly referring to alpha-this and
beta-that and the emergency services make use of its letters in their
call-signs or to read out a vehicle registration over the radio. No, the
language is far from dead - after all the word 'alphabet' itself is made up
of the Greek letters 'alpha' and 'beta', the first two letters of the
Classical Greek alphabet.
