Cello Lessons

Learn to play the Cello. Cello tutors throughout the UK; more welcome.

The Cello has several accessories that can enhance or diversify its sound quality. It is the second largest bowed string music instrument in the violin family after the double bass. It is also called the violoncello and is tuned an octave lower than the viola.

Usually the top part of the cello is made from quality woods that give it good sound qualities by transmitting the strings vibrations to the body of the cello. The curve at the bridge of the instrument allows the cellist to bow one string at a time. Wood can however be substituted with carbon fibre or aluminium. Wooden cellos are however of better quality and thus more expensive. When purchasing the instruments, check that the strings are quality and that the body is made of maple

The cellist can only play the cello while seated. The pin located at the end of the instrument helps raise it off the floor with the rest of the instrument is supported by the cellist's calves.

Apart from the side and back covers which are made of wood, the cello has a neck, a peg holder and scroll, which can be wooden too or made from other material. The strings are held in position by a wooden piece refereed to as the ‘nut’. The nut should be well cut and placed.

Cellos can be used as individual instruments in a musical or incorporated with other instruments in an orchestra. The instrument can be tuned two octaves lower than middle C, and works the same way as the viola except that it produces notes an octave lower. Due to its light sound, the cello is not suitable for ensemble playing and often has to be combined with instruments that have deeper bass

The cello is mainly used in classical music although it has recently been used in other genres like rhythm and blues, rock, hip-hop and even rock music. The cello is versatile in use making it an all time favourite with music groups. They have fine tuners that connect the tailpiece and the strings therefore making the instrument easy to tune. The tailpiece can be plastic, wooden or metallic and gives the cellist an option of adjusting the strings to achieve a louder, more projecting tone, with fewer overtones.

The cello manufacturers produce different sizes of the instrument to cater for different types of people; there being seven different sizes to cover different body height and hand sizes. These sizes range from a full size, seven–eighths, three-quarters, half-cellos, quarter cello, an eighth cello, a tenth cello and a one-sixteenth cello.

The sizes simply scale down the size of the instrument but do not affect with the range and usage of the cello. Usually a bow is provided in the purchased package. The cellist can opt to play either smooth notes with breaks or a variety of notes thus offering listeners a wide range of sounds.

Basic maintenance of the Cello involves wiping it with a damp cloth. The original varnish should be taken care of and if any scrapings have occurred, they can be repaired by a professional. If over tightened it is possible to break or damage the strings of a cello.
