Online tuition is the ideal medium through which the modern business person can learn a new language or skill. Its main attractions are:
Lessons tutored online are in every way the same as face-to-face coaching. Sadly the discredited and inappropriate elearning is often mixed up with online tuition. The principal difference (and the one which matters most) is that online tuition is a real teacher in real time and not a computer substitute. The webinars are conducted at distance but the dialogue is live and as 'real' as a telephone call is a real conversation. How can a computer take the place of a human being? Elearning is just not a solution for most people and it is not something we would recommend.
Online tuition makes use of the freely-available services like MSN Messenger or SKYPE to provide the carrier and all it needs is a webcam or microphone to give digital quality sound. As a online teacher myself, I prefer tutoring this way and fully agree with the research findings that a webinar session is actually MORE focussed than face-to-face tutoring.
I have found that the most effective way of tutoring on the internet, perhaps surprisingly, is without the video element. Sound quality is digital and extremely clear and, when there is no visual distraction of having to look at the student, it is easy to keep the lesson on target and to the point. One of the main advantages is that we can agree to stop for 15 to 30 minutes and go about our own business without having the other party sitting and watching. Being able to eat your lunch or make a phone call without the student being on-hand reduces the stress considerably.
The internet doesn't need to make the service impersonal and a well-structured webinar is every bit as personal as its face-to-face alternative. It is certainly as productive from a learning point of view.
Many busy executives find their workload makes it difficult to commit to a regular time - because the tutor does not have to travel to the client, he or she can often accommodate lessons or cancellations at shorter notice. It may even be necessary to use two or more tutors.
Some languages are popular and there may be no difficulty in finding a nearby tutor however, as companies compete for new markets or engage workers from other 'new' countries, there just may not be a local speaker of that particular language who can help. That leaves the executive with two choices - go off on an intensive residential course (which time or budget may not permit) or to attempt to learn the language unaided from books and tapes. Online tuition is both more convenient and more cost-effective.
Anysubject has yet to find a subject (apart from handwriting and even that is possible) which it has not been able to tutor online.
Online tuition is a real and sensible alternative and well worth considering. Just plug in your webcam, set up the microphone and speakers (an easy job which should only take a few minutes at most), put your feet up and start learning!
