Birthday Present

Birthday presents are notoriously difficult to choose - everyone knows that.

Do you go with safety and choose a gift you 'know' your friend will like only to find out that they've already got it or been given it by someone else? Do you give the same thing as you gave last year and hope no-one remembers? Do you do endless research and ask lots of pointed questions in an effort to find the perfect birthday present?

Of course you can always choose the 'safe' option and send money as a birthday gift. I always think that is insulting somehow as, whatever you send, ultimately took no thought and is usually soon forgotten.

Worse than that, though, a badly-chosen birthday gift can also offend. Try giving a child a game they've already played and grown out of or a DVD of a film that they consider childish. What about giving saucepans to Mum (Mom) or gardening equipment to Dad (Pa)? They're halfway through a midlife crisis and the last thing they want on their birthday is some dismal reminder that 'all' they have achieved in their life is the ability to cook Sunday dinner or to cultivate a few square yards of herbaceous border (no disrespect intended). Your special birthday present missed the point!
