Become a tutor

Like the idea of individual coaching and want to earn some money?

If you want to become a tutor, there are a number of options as to how you can give private tuition and be remunerated for your tutoring services. The most popular five ways to become a tutor are as follows:

Join a tuition agency
Not a bad way to start and get some experience. A good agency will pre-select your students for you so that you are only asked to tutor those tutees who live in your area and require the subjects and levels that you offer. They will have their own application and screening process and will talk you through what they require in order for you to become a tutor on their books. The main advantages are that the negotiation of hourly rates is usually done by the agency and there is no expenditure on advertising and self-promotion by the tutor. There is also no need to have been a teacher although you do need to be at least a graduate. The disadvantages are that the tuition agency will have set rules and will also take a sizeable percentage of the fees to cover their profits and overheads.

Become an independent tutor
Many tutors operate this way. Their work comes from personal recommendation and from adverts placed in local newspapers. They set their own hourly rates and make their own rules. The main advantages are that there is no approval process and anyone can become a tutor in this way and also that the tutor keeps 100% of the private tuition fee. The principal disadvantages are that the tutor has no-one to discuss problem students with and will have to finance any advertising 'on spec'. This might be a bit too much work for a graduate still at university - they are better advised to join an agency and let someone else handle the admin.

Join a tutorial college
If you become a tutor for a tutorial college, you will have the advantage of a secure classroom and a salary. Students are allocated to you and you have all the support of a typical academic establishment. There will undoubtedly be a detailed screening process and you are unlikely to be accepted if you are inexperienced in group classes. It is unlikely you will get any one-to-one tuition work this way - something that many ex-teachers find most attractive about the work.

Work for a local authority
Some local authorities organise group or drop-in tuition centres. The idea is that the tutor (who almost certainly will be or will have been a qualified teacher). Tutors are expected to go from desk-to-desk attending to the needs of each student or, alternatively, give a pre-specified lesson on a chosen topic. Because the private tuition is free as far as the students are concerned, there is a possibility that it will not be perceived as having much value and part of the tutor's job will be to 'sell' the information as would a teacher in a classroom. There will be a very long clearing process if you choose to become a tutor for a local authority.

Online tuition
As online communication networks improve in quality and fuel costs soar, the concept of online tuition is fast becoming a preferred option for many students. The main advantages with online tuition is that there is no travelling, it is fully-flexible on working hours and that literally the world is your oyster. The primary disadvantages are that you will be expected to cope with a number of syllabi and also you will be dependent on a remote agency (quite possibly in a different country) collecting the money and paying you. Online tuition agencies are usually more laid-back if you wish to become a tutor for them since the student and the tutor have no cause to meet.

Tutoring is a great way of earning a living and all you need to do to get started in private tuition is to choose your modus and become a tutor!
