Choosing and using a portable air compressor and its
tools
Where's the pressure? Sounds like you need a new air
compressor.
A portable air compressor is specified in terms of its capacity (in terms of cubic feet per minute or cfm) and the number of tools it can simultaneously operate (eg 'single tool' or 'dual tool'). Always purchase a quality machine which is capable of powering the most demanding tool that you intend to use.
A portable air compressor is usually fuelled by diesel but petrol-driven and electric-powered ones also exist. Air pressure powers the tool via the rubber hose and the pressure is controlled by a valve on the compressor.
If you are buying a second-hand portable air compressor make sure you check the hose and the coupling very carefully as these can be extremely dangerous. If the rubber is perished or the coupling bent then either do not buy it or replace the damaged hose immediately. Injuries arising from damaged compressor hose (which is under high pressure) can be very disfiguring and accidents may even result in blindness or severe plastic surgery.
Ignore the 'macho' approach and keep safety in the forefront of your mind. Whenever operating a portable air compressor, you should wear ear defenders, gloves, work boots and goggles. Try not to stand next to the coupling (which is the natural weak point) when you are working. Compressors are noisy and can damage the ears over time if suitable protection is not worn.
The main types of portable air compressor are as follows:
Rotary screw portable air compressor:
This is the most common and has an output of typically around 50 to 1500 cfm. A popular setting is just under 200 cfm at which pressure the compressor can power two tools.
Lorry-mounted portable air compressor:
These compressors are fitted in the bed of the lorry or under the bonnet with the latter being particularly convenient in terms of space. The lorry's engine powers the compressor which both makes it easy to maintain and dependent on the engine running to operate.
Deck-mounted portable air compressor:
These are independent compressors which sit on the bed of the lorry and have their own power supply.
Quincy and Husky are two popular portable air compressors. Their machines are fairly durable and quiet (and thus suitable for domestic use) and can be used to operate a wide range of tools as well as inflating pools, tyres etc.
We hope that this information removed the pressure from buying a portable air compressor!
