Before commencing the course (which usually is a one, one and a half or two-hour session a week), the tutor will talk to you about what you want to achieve and what your deadline is. He or she will then prepare a programme of study for both of you to follow. We found that all of our adult literacy students had different needs so hence this extremely flexible approach. Many came to us disillusioned by their experiences at local colleges which they found inappropriate, slow-moving or embarrassing. For more advanced students, there are courses in Business English - choice of vocabulary, structure of correspondence, how to 'sell yourself' in writing and the protocol of written material. If your specific requirements are neither of these, a good agency should still be able to help. They should be able to do spelling courses, elocution lessons, creative writing, desktop publishing etc - just tell them what you want. Increasing your literacy and numeracy skills at any level will bring about an almost immediate improvement in quality of life.
