11+ Papers
Grammar school 11 plus entrance exam consists of five elements - Mathematics, English, Verbal Reasoning, Non-verbal reasoning and the interview.
The Mathematics and English elements are largely an extension of what is taught at Key Stage 2 in Primary Schools. In the Maths test tje child is tested on their knowledge of multiplication, division, addition and subtraction, decimals, fractions, ratios, converting units, charts and the like. The English paper concentrates on spelling, punctuation, grammar, wordpower etc.
These papers establish how well the child has absorbed the education that they received at primary school. The next stage is for the Grammar School to assess the potential of the child; their intelligence.
Verbal reasoning could be commonly known as 'solving word puzzles'. The paper tests the child's ability to select the right word from multiple choices of similar ones, find chains of words, perform word association, choose synonyms and antonyms, complete sentences and generally show a depth of understanding of the English language. The best preparation for this element of the Entrance Examination is an extensive vocabulary developed from reading an eclectic variety of books.
Non-verbal reasoning tests the child's ability to solve 'IQ Test' type problems which consist of patterns, pictures, shapes and symbols. The questions relate to identifying families of shapes, completing sequences, choosing the odd one out or by developing rules which connect pairs of objects and then applying that rule to subsequent pairs.
The interview is a test of your child's personality and sociability and an opportunity for the senior teachers present to ask questions about the child's hobbies, interests or even discuss the child's essay or Eleven Plus papers with them.
Preparing for the 11+ Entrance Examination is definitely a 'team effort'. An organised family determined to give their child the best chance will start their lead-up 18 months to two years in advance of the big day.
Always bear in mind two things. Firstly, the worst case scenario is not failing, it is your child passing the Eleven Plus Entrance Examination and then not being able to withstand the pace that he or she will be expected to maintain at the Grammar School. Secondly, no-one can do better than their best. Your child's preparation should be directed towards helping them do that.
