A Mediterranean Cruise will typically take in a number of the many countries and islands which touch the Mediterranean Sea. These might include:

  • Spain
  • France
  • Italy
  • Greece
  • Albania
  • Turkey
  • Cyprus
  • Malta
  • Jordan
  • Egypt
  • Tunisia

If just the mention of those Mediterranean countries isn't enough to stir your imagination then consider what you could visit in more detail. For example:

Athens, a port city in Greece is a world historical icon. It offers amazing natural scenes, surrounded by four majestic mountains and is located in a basin. There are a lot of sites to visit here, shopping to do, restaurants to dine at and museums to visit. There are some architectural wonders, which include the Parthenon and the Acropolis, exhibiting the advancement and intelligence of the Greek.

Elsewhere in Greece, also visit Cyrene, one of Greece's best-preserved cities of Cyrenaica. It hosts a theatre, agora, a gymnasium, tombs and temples. The theatre especially gives a marvellous sight of the sea.

In Alexandria, you will find the famous Pharos Lighthouse, a Wonder of the Ancient World.

In Cairo, the capital of Egypt is yet another of the original Seven Wonders of the World, the Great pyramid of Giza. You could also visit the Great Sphinx and the famous Egyptian Museum, which hosts a history of numerous millennia. The local markets filled with vendors, shops and a diverse culture are simply a thrill.

For a more modern destination why not include Cannes in France and see how important the film industry is to that city. Rub shoulders with the world's well-heeled and see how the other half lives at its famous Marina.

Also modern but of a more serious nature is Malta - an English-speaking island in the middle of the Mediterranean and a key stepping stone for Germany's defence of Italy in WWII. Find out how and why the whole island was awarded a Cross in recognition for its bravery against the Nazis.

A smaller island but no less famous for its history is Rhodes, site of the Colossus - another Wonder of the Ancient World.

One thing you can be certain of. Whatever destinations you choose to include on your Mediterranean Cruise, you will be guaranteed plenty of fascinating history as well as following in the footsteps of immortal legends like Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and the Egyptian pharaohs.

Take time selecting destinations that interest you and researching their history or take pot-luck and just choose a cruise by its duration and starting/finishing port. Even if you go for the latter, you are most unlikely to be disappointed.
