If you are a mother-to-be, how can you make sure you have a healthy pregnancy?

Looking after yourself is the same as looking after your new baby - here are some healthy concerns

Healthy pregnancy is what all mothers-to-be want. A mother must insist on living a healthy life before, during and after the pregnancy. Many mothers get worried about the safety of the delivery and many succumb to complications related to unhealthy pregnancies. Most pregnancies are usually classified as healthy depending on the regular medical assessments also known as antenatal care and on the day of delivery. Experts prescribe several factors to be taken seriously by expectant mothers before and during pregnancies. It is paramount that a mother attends antenatal clinics in order to ensure the safety of her baby.

An expectant mother should eat a well-balanced diet throughout her pregnancy. She should understand that from the onset of pregnancy, she would be responsible for her baby’s nutrition as well as her own. It is advisable to eat many small meals as opposed to eating one big meal. This is also more applicable to pregnant women as most of them go through appetite fluctuations during the pregnancy. She should also take plenty of fluids, vegetables and fruits. Amid the selections of food, she must ensure that the food served is hygienic. Unhealthy food would pose a health risk to not only herself but also the baby. Conditions such as Listeria can cause miscarriages and severe hazards as well. It is wise to consume fresh meals laden with the nutritive content. Undercooked food or leftovers are not advisable. However, leftovers can be re-cooked to make a new fresh meal.

An expectant mother needs to take plenty of proteins found in meat products and fish. Fish contains folic acid responsible for the development of the baby. Folic acid prevents neural tube malformations common in babies. Plenty intake of fish ensures supplements of vitamin D, minerals, omega- 3 and oils for the development of the baby’s brain, nerves and weight check. It is ideal for an expectant mother to indulge in regular exercises. This will give her the stamina and endurance required to carry the extra weight of the baby in her womb. The exercises boost the morale and circulation of blood in the body. The activities act to alleviate depression in mothers and baby’s activeness. A mother can swim, run, jog, walk or engage in yoga. They are essential for the formation of the baby and comfort of the mother.

Caffeine and alcohol intake should be minimized as they increase the chances of miscarriages and abnormality with the baby. Some adverse complications in childbirth are associated with smoking and use of drugs. Experts also prescribe good rest for expectant mothers. They need recess from regular activities and work. Rest helps prevent fatigue while helping the body to adjust to the pregnancy situation. Good rest and gentle massage keeps off backaches and other negative characteristics associated with pregnancy. The expectant mother must identify safe relaxation techniques that allow both her and the baby to rest.

Several positive attributes that develop in children all date back to when they were foetuses. All that can be enabled by having a healthy pregnancy.
