Exam preparation is just a technique - it is about
working smart, not working hard
Facing a testing time ahead? Are you ready for the
examination? If not, here's how to prepare for your exam
Preparing for an exam can be quite stressful; however, it need not be
if you have been keeping up with class work, attending regular lectures
and taking good notes. Exams time marks the one of the most trying
periods in a student's life
"Hey, don't worry but how you do in the next couple of weeks will
just determine the rest of your life Get plenty of sleep now, won't
you?"
Mmm, not the most helpful of comments but it is one which will go
through the heads of thousands of students again this year. The truth is
that, yes, exams are important but they are not the be-all-and-end-all
of life. Work sensibly and logically and prepare for the day and no-one,
but no-one can ask or expect more of you than that. But, how do you do
prepare? Here are some tips.
- Do not lag behind in your reading. Allocate revision sessions
either during the day, early in the morning or in the evening.
- Know the objectives of the exam that you are preparing for, the
sort of questions you would expect the exam to contain and get hold of
a past marking scheme so that you can see the relative emphasis of the
different elements which make up the exam.
- Identify the most likely examinable areas. Usually, one finds
oneself with too much reading material to go through with limited
time. In such a scenario you can highlight the important areas as this
makes it easier when reviewing the notes later.
- Break the subject into smaller categories which are easier to
handle. This helps with time management since you can have a study
timetable with the different elements evenly distributed.
- Get help with problem areas of the topic unless you can be sure
that there is little to no importance attached to this aspect.
- Join or organise a group of students who meet regularly to discuss
the subject. Try to end with some social event so that you don't 'just
work'. Passing an exam is about balancing your time, not giving
over 100% of it to study.
- Unless you really only do have one exam, balance your time between
subjects so that you spread yourself around. Make sure your timetable
for the final weeks reflects the order in which you are being
examined.
Contrary to what students might have you believe, preparing for an
exam is not a one-time thing that should be done at one particular time
in the academic calendar; rather, exam preparation should be spread
out over the entire schooling period.
Being a student is about learning, passing exams and having fun.
Balance the three and success will follow.
Good luck preparing for your exam.
